KEENEY MARKET

Newington, CT / 97,255 SF / Retail and Mixed Use

Established in 1923 as the first woman-owned manufacturing company in Connecticut, the Keeney Plumbing Company built it’s Art Deco headquarters in downtown Newington, just outside of Hartford. Expanding every few years to keep up with the latest in plumbing technology, the building became a mashup of different manufacturing styles, all meticulously maintained until the company relocated and left the quirky, amazing shell behind. FORRM teamed up with Stillman Development to reimagine the former factory as a center for local retail that could expand and revitalize the town center through interior and exterior paths, meeting spaces, and visual connections. The design includes restoring the original Art Deco façade on Main Street as well as modernizing the industrial south façade with a steel canopy and new storefront. Working with the developer and local officials, the building is being converted into retail and maker space, soon to be joined by restaurant and community facility. Construction began in summer 2023, so stay tuned for updated renderings and construction photos as this project takes shape.
